Hi all,
I hope you’re well.
This is one of those posts that turns out a lot longer than I’d planned but there is a point to it, I promise.
You might have noticed that I usually send a blog out on a Monday and that this week’s was delayed for a few days. Clients who have trained with me for a while will tell you that I never try to do too many sessions or things in one week. I find that, if I don’t drown in a busy schedule, I function a lot better.
Having said that, every now and again life throws things at you that simply have to get done.
Just to give you an idea; I have my personal training business. I have the HPNB website which, believe it or not, takes up a fair bit of time. And I have my dogs which need 2-3 hours of exercise a day. On top of that, I have a couple of other business things going on. Oh, and of course my long-suffering wife would also like to see me every now and again 🙂 So I tend to write my blogs on a Sunday, after doing my paperwork.
And then this Sunday a friend of mine asked for a bit of help with a dog he had rescued from a home earlier that day.
If you have read any of my CastlePersonalTraining blogs you are likely to have come across this little fella;

Now Buddy came to me as a little rescue and Buddy is magic. Not just a little magic but actually, genuinely, F’ing magic. Buddy is the best dog in the world. And Buddy is the dog you ask when you want to see if your dog is a psychopath or not 🙂 Basically Buddy is the doggy version of Cesar Millan
So my friend got in touch as he came across a neglected dog and he wanted to see whether he was aggressive towards other dogs or not.

Wax is a 6 year old male Rottweiler. He’d been living in a garden without shelter, which in Scotland is not pleasant, for the past 4 years and not walked for most of that time. He escaped from the garden and was found by the police. When the officers brought him back to the house the owner said she didn’t want him anyways so they could keep him. My friend picked him up the following day and “Waxie” was not in a good way. Honestly, the smell coming off him was very special.
So my friend picked him up and immediately took him to my house so Wax could meet Buddy and then we could decide on a course of action.
Buddy didn’t get eaten, which is a win. 🙂
Anyways, after the Buddy OK and a nice long walk we decided that Waxie could stay for a while. It did however mean that in between my Castle PT training sessions I had a new pup to take care of and help with. Hence the usual Monday blog did not appear.
So why am I writing about this this week?
Well, other than to offer you an explanation, I believe the Buddy and Waxie story perfectly illustrates what I believe we should really strive for.
If I want to live in a world where everybody is a little bit kinder to each other, then I have to put the effort in and do that myself.
If I focus on the wants and needs of those around me that need a bit of help, and I’m able to give them it, then it’s my duty to do so. I have written before about “What we owe to eachother”.
This is basically why HPNB was started. Not to make a load of money from the millions of women suffering from Diastasis Recti and Post-Natal problems but to help everybody a little bit by making the knowledge available to those who need it.
I tend not to be too active on Social Media but I made the mistake of contributing to a discussion about Post-Natal health on Facebook. I was immediately sent 3 angry messages from Personal Trainers who were not happy that we only charged $10 a month. They offer their own online training programs and fear that they would lose business because of it. In some cases indirectly as 2 of them are weightloss PTs who just see a subscription model at this price as “setting a trend”. Personally I hope it does. If an expert weightloss PT would set up a subscription website like HPNB I would be delighted.
But my point is that we shouldn’t just look at the amount of money we can make or how busy we are.
We shouldn’t just be looking at our own lives and asking if we’re doing OK. It’s also about making sure those around us are OK. Our loved ones, family members, friends, neighbours, even strangers and definitely puppies and kittens. If I can’t find, or make, the time to help them then I’m not doing things right. And, if I’m not doing things right, then I can’t complain that the world around me isn’t as nice as I’d like it to be.
Anyways, Waxie is a great dog. He just got a full bill-of health from the vet, some vaccinations and we’re hoping to find him a nice home soon. If you know anyone in the Edinburgh area who would love a big old lazy Rottweiler who loves people, dogs and cuddles, I have just the pup. And the world will be a better place for it.

Take care,
Peter
