Hi all,
I was asked the above question the other day. Actually, what the person asked me was “is this doing this online the same as training with you in person?”. The simple, and honest, answer to that question is “No”.
I know some online personal trainers might publicly disagree but face-to-face training with a personal trainer is always more effective than doing a program that person has designed.
I charge about $1000 (£700) for my post-natal package in Edinburgh. If I were a London or New York based personal trainer I’d charge about 3x that. On a completely unrelated note; Sometimes I wonder why I don’t move to New York 😉

With personal training what you are paying for is someone to constantly pay attention to how you move, to keep giving you your clues for doing the exercises correctly and help you focus on the correct muscles at all times. In addition to this a good personal trainer can also constantly adapt session plans depending on aches, niggles or general levels of exhaustion. And, of course, you’re paying for someone’s time. I’d say you’re also paying for someone to count for you but my clients know that my 10 isn’t necessarily the same as their 10 😉
With a program you have to do more work yourself; looking at videos of the exercises to learn how to do them properly, giving yourself clues and hints, motivating yourself to go and train and, most importantly, be aware at how you’re feeling through an exercise. This is why a lot of people don’t succeed when they just buy a program. In many cases this is not the fault of the person buying the program but is to do with how the information is relayed to the client.
I watch a lot of YouTube videos of other personal trainers and fitness people, there is some amazing stuff out there. But what I like about videos is not at all what my clients like. I love watching Jeff Cavaliere spend 15 minutes on Scapular Rotation. Jeff is probably the best YouTube fitness trainer out there at the moment, for general fitness and physio stuff.
>But none of my clients care; They don’t have 15 minutes to learn the intricacies of an exercise. They just want to be told how to do the thing in a short clip. This is why we have short Youtube clips for each exercise with voiceovers to remind people of the teaching points. The longest clip we have is about 5 minutes, and that’s a must watch for everyone joining us as it’s actually really important.
This is the one.
And this brings me to the problem with most online programs that I think we’ve cracked here at HPNB; we really have kept the amount of work you have to do to a minimum. We don’t give you a million new exercises each week and the routines don’t take long to learn.
All the clips are short; all are done with voice overs of the teaching points and we try to get it as close to a Personal Training experience as we can. On top of that you have access to the forums where you can ask any fitness related question you have and get an answer the same day.
It’s not as good as having me beside you, but it’s the best you can get if you don’t live in Edinburgh.
Did I mention we’re the only Post-natal exercise program you get to try for free?
Take care,
Peter
